Transforming Rural Food Systems: The FoodCoP Project Takes Off in
The scenic town of Fundão played host to the official launch of FoodCoP, an initiative aimed at revolutionizing rural food systems across Europe. On November 28th and 29th, stakeholders from nine countries came together to kickstart this project that promises to bridge the gap between innovation and sustainability in rural areas.

The Vision: A Greener Future Through Collaboration
The European Union recognizes the potential of rural areas in fostering sustainable growth. With the bioeconomy sector already contributing €2.2 trillion and employing 17.5 million people across Europe, its future impact could be staggering. By 2050, projections suggest this figure could soar to €3 trillion, driven by sectors like agri-food that are at the heart of Europe’s green transition.
FoodCoP aligns with this vision by cultivating a community of Startup Villages—innovation hubs designed to stimulate local economies through entrepreneurship and sustainable practices. This initiative builds upon concepts developed by the JRC and the Countryside and Community Research Institute, expanding their reach to empower rural areas with circular bioeconomy strategies.

Creating Resilient Food Systems
At its core, FoodCoP aims to strengthen rural food systems by fostering collaboration and resource-sharing among Startup Villages. Through circular bioeconomy practices, the project focuses on:
- Optimizing resource efficiency.
- Reducing food-related emissions and waste.
- Boosting the economic resilience of rural communities.
The project also aims to break the innovation divide between urban and rural regions, ensuring that cutting-edge solutions are accessible to every corner of Europe.

United for Change
FoodCoP’s strength lies in its diversity. Coordinated by the Municipality of Fundão, the project brings together 14 partners spanning nine countries, including SMEs, universities, research institutions, and regional innovation networks. This multidisciplinary team ensures a wide-reaching and impactful approach to achieving its ambitious goals.
A Two-Year Mission with Lasting Impact
Supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, FoodCoP is set to run for 24 months. By leveraging community engagement, knowledge sharing, and action-based solutions, the project hopes to leave a legacy of resilience and innovation.
